Nissan Set for Futuristic Overhaul Of Its Interiors

February 20th, 2018 by

The interiors of Nissan vehicle will look very different in the near future, according to the head of the brand’s European design center.

This Nissan concept vehicle showcases what the future of automotive interiors may look like.

“From 2020 it will be the real autonomous and electric vehicle era, so at that time I think we will not continue the current design direction,” Mamoru Aoki, said to Auto Express. “Before, EV competition was small, but now it is much greater, so appearance is more important. Tesla is here already, so we have to compete.”

Autonomous driving means motorists of the future will spend less time piloting a vehicle and more time observing its finishes. This has Nissan’s designers thinking about vast changes to the interior.

“The floor can be flat, and the dashboard can be very minimal as the air-conditioning unit can go in the space where the engine compartment would normally be,” Aoki said.

How quickly will these changes come about? Soon, if Aoki’s predictions are correct. Aoki posits that certain elements may arrive as soon 2020, when the production model of the Nissan IMx electric compact SUV hits dealerships.
